BA in Psychology Degree Program

Building a foundation for advanced psychological studies.

If you are interested in human, social, or counseling services, then the Bachelor of Arts in Psychology might be right for you. An undergraduate degree in psychology is highly flexible and can be applied to jobs and careers in social services, counseling, education, medicine, and business. Many advanced degrees in health and counseling are open to psychology graduates.

We’ve partnered with Adelphi’s Gordon F. Derner Institute for Psychological Studies to offer the undergraduate BA in Psychology. College of Professional and Continuing Studies students enrolled in this major will complete the College of Professional and Continuing Studies core and general education requirements, in addition to the psychology major courses required by the Derner Institute.

Courses generally follow a defined course sequence. The BA in Psychology curriculum is divided into four categories:

  • Foundation courses ensure broad exposure to the fundamental disciplines in psychology. Typically, these courses are prerequisites for advanced study in psychology.
  • Methods and lab courses provide familiarity with research methodology, including statistics and the process of designing and conducting research.
  • Central courses cover the major areas of psychological science and practice. These courses are a prerequisite for an advanced seminar.
  • Advanced and seminar courses examine specific areas of research or practice in the subdisciplines of psychology. Each year’s topics are chosen on the basis of developments in the field, faculty research interests, and students’ needs.
